A conservative seeks to improve life for most people (safety and economic progress)- a practical matter. A leftist (typically a Democrat) seeks to make life better for tiny constituencies at the expense of the great majority — an ideological matter — making life restricted and terrible for average people.
Conservatism seeks stability and improvement.
Leftism seeks destruction and submission.
